What is a piadina?

A piadina is a type of traditional Italian flatbread. Piadina is a versatile and popular food in Italy, often used as a wrap or sandwich bread.

What’s the difference between pizza and piadina?

The way you bake a pizza or a piadina is different. You bake a pizza in the oven while you bake a piadina on the stove. Another big difference is that the piadina doesn’t contain yeast, while a pizza does. The yeast makes the pizza fluffy while the piadina doesn’t rise. The piadina is usually flatter than a pizza, more like a flatbread or tortilla wrap. Various characteristics make piadinas different from pizzas:

  1. Dough:
    • Pizza: Pizza is typically made with yeast, which results in a soft and chewy crust.
    • Piadina: Piadina, on the other hand, is something you make without yeast. It is usually thinner and more similar in texture to a tortilla or flatbread.
  2. Toppings:
    • Pizza: Pizzas can have a wide range of toppings, including tomato sauce, cheese, vegetables, meat, and seafood. The variations are virtually endless.
    • Piadina: Piadina traditionally has a simpler set of toppings, often including ingredients like cheese, cured meats, greens, and spreads. Typically, you fold a piadina in half with the fillings enclosed.
  3. Cooking Method:
    • Pizza: You typically bake a pizza in a hot pizza or stone oven, where it bakes quickly at high temperatures.
    • Piadina: Piadina is baked on a griddle or stovetop, similar to how you might bake a pancake or tortilla. You tend to do this at lower temperatures than pizza, resulting in a soft, pliable flatbread.
  4. Origin:
    • Pizza: Pizza is originally from Naples, Italy, and has gained worldwide popularity with countless regional variations.
    • Piadina: Piadina originates from the Emilia-Romagna region in Northern Italy, and it’s particularly popular in that area.
  5. Serving Style:
    • Pizza: Pizza is typically served as a round, open-faced dish that is sliced into individual portions. Unless you’re eating a Calzone.
    • Piadina: You usually fold a Piadina in half to enclose the fillings, creating a semi-circular or pocket-like shape.
  6. Usage:
    • Pizza: You eat Pizza as more of a complete meal, and you’ll usually enjoy it as the main course.
    • Piadina: You eat Piadina as a snack or an appetizer, but it can also serve as a light meal.

In summary, piadina and pizza are both from the Italian kitchen share some similarities. They are distinct in terms of their dough, toppings, cooking methods, and presentation. Both are delicious and have their own unique appeal.
