Read this before you book a vacation to La Palma, Tips!

Looking back on our recent vacation to La Palma, we were caught by the Canary Islands’ charm. However, a few insights would have been valuable before we set foot on this island. Here are essential tips and things you need to know before booking your dream vacation to La Palma.

1. Language

Spanish is the predominant language in La Palma, and some also speak German. While touristy areas may feature some English, grasping a few Spanish basics is advisable. Restaurant menus are available in Spanish, sometimes featuring an English translation and now and then a German translation. A pocketful of Spanish phrases will undoubtedly enhance your travel experience.

2. Roads

Driving around the island exposed us to varying road conditions. The eastern coast boasts well-maintained roads, but brace yourself for bends and steep inclines due to La Palma’s topography. Most routes are manageable with a bit of driving courage.

3. Budget Friendly

La Palma pleasantly surprised us with its affordability. Flights, car rentals, and accommodations were budget-friendly. Dining and excursions were also reasonably priced, making La Palma an accessible paradise without breaking the bank.

4. Weather

La Palma’s weather is distinctive due to its topographical features. The island’s central ridge often traps clouds, resulting in limited rainfall. You can expect ample sunshine. In our experience, the west side of the island usually experiences better mornings and early afternoons, while the East shines in (late) afternoons. This, of course, could be a coincidence, but this gave us the idea to go to the other half of the island if it got cloudy so we could always see the sun.

In summary, a journey to La Palma promises a delightful experience, especially with these invaluable tips. Embrace the local language, navigate the roads with confidence, and enjoy the affordability of La Palma.
