The Botanical Gardens in Brisbane

Brisbane has two botanical gardens that you can visit for free. When we were in Australia we visited both of them. In this article, we’ll tell you more about these gardens and we’ll give you our recommendations on if it’s worthwhile visiting them.

City Botanic Gardens

The botanical garden in the center looks like a big park with many plants and there is also a playground for children. It’s definitely worth visiting when you’re in Brisbane. There is a beautiful fountain and there are different areas in the garden, for example, fig-trees, bamboo, and palms. We liked the contrast between the calmness in the gardens and the big buildings of the city behind it as you can see in the picture above.

Mt. Coot-Tha Botanical Gardens

The botanical garden outside of the city is the Mt. Coot-Tha Botanical Gardens. You can easily drive here by car since they have many parking spots. It’s also possible to go by bike or public transport (bus). This botanical garden is big and there are multiple routes you can choose to walk, some are about 30 minutes, others a few hours. There are for example a Japanese garden, a Fern House, and an Australian Rain forest. There is even a planetarium that you can visit next to the entrance of the botanical garden. We saw many animals like birds and reptiles while we walked through the garden.

Both gardens are worth visiting. However, if you don’t have enough time to see both gardens we would recommend visiting the one outside of the city. It’s bigger and more spectacular than the one in the city. You also have a nice lookout over the garden with the city in the background.
